Getting Back Into The Swing of Things

There is much to be done...and I'm the only one who can do it. Alas. I just returned from a trip back home for the memorial service for my aunt, Ann Watlington. I'm going to miss her terribly. Her illness and the possibility of her death has kept me awake at night for months. Now that she has died and we have said our farewells, I assume I'm supposed to get back on track here in my Ph.D. program. There are going to be some serious changes in my life in the next several months and if I am going to get through comps, I will need a plan.

Thankfully, I have wise friends and kind professors and advisors who are helping me out. I've moved my process back a few months to give myself some breathing room.

So, why share any of this? Well, with so much press out there about PhD programs, higher education, teaching jobs, etc., I just wanted to remind myself and you, I guess, that I'm human. Seems a silly thing to say, but these programs aren't really rail road tracks or assembly lines. It's much more fluid than that. These are our lives and things happen and people are generous and we have to find new reserves for focus and courage.

That's all. I just wanted to share that.
