I'm staring at a new pile of books. Liturgy and the arts, beauty and the profane, medieval history (specifically about the development of a literate class), and more ethnomusicology. It's going to be a good few weeks. French starts mid-July and I want to get this other reading done before my life belongs to strings of vowels. I managed a three-week break for myself. Now it is time to dig in again.
Yesterday I met with the chair of the music department at Cal. He is incredibly generous with his time. We spoke of the classes coming up in the next academic year and what might be appropriate and helpful for me to take. There are several courses that interest me. It's all going to come down to the schedule, of course, and what I can weasel my way into. He's also connecting me with other Ph.D. students who are teaching fellows. One is teaching a class in medieval music..."sacred and profane." I'm very excited about the opportunity to dig into that bibliography.
You may see a lot of medieval stuff around here over the next nine months. Ha!
